Why Q5 is a golden opportunity for advertisers on TikTok

The holidays end, but performance doesn't. With consumer demand carrying into the New Year and CPMs easing from their November peak, Q5 is an opportunity to reach engaged audiences and drive results on TikTok.

Invisible quarter. Visible results.

Many marketers view the post-holiday period, often called "Q5" or the "invisible quarter," as a time of slowdown. But consumer activity doesn't simply stop after the holidays. Shopping continues, gaming audiences stay active, and people turn their attention toward personal goals and new discoveries.

For advertisers on TikTok, Q5 is a chance to capture this sustained demand while taking advantage of a more efficient media environment.

The post-holiday window that performs

The weeks after the holidays bring a shift in consumer priorities. Shoppers move from gifting others to treating themselves, redeeming gift cards, and looking for products and experiences that support their New Year goals.

Seventy percent of consumers plan to shop during the week immediately after December 25 to take advantage of sales and redeem gift cards.¹ On TikTok, 75% of users spend the same amount of time or more shopping during Q5², while 63% shop specifically for themselves.¹

This creates an opportunity for brands to meet consumers as their needs evolve, from holiday shopping to personal purchases, new routines, and fresh starts.

Make your budget go further

Q5 isn't just about sustained demand. It can also offer a more efficient opportunity to reach audiences.

TikTok's global CPMs decline through the Q5 window compared with the November peak, allowing advertisers to make their media budgets work harder.³ Meanwhile, as January approaches, consumer interest shifts toward wellness, organization, and self-improvement. TikTok has seen a 169% increase in 'New Year, New Me' content within 30 days of Christmas.³

Gift cards add another opportunity to convert this renewed interest into purchases. Fifty-two percent of shoppers give gift cards as holiday presents, and 40% of TikTok users plan to spend the value of their gift card or more.⁴

For advertisers, the combination of sustained activity, evolving purchase intent, and potentially lower media costs makes Q5 a valuable time to connect discovery with action.

Apps: Turn intent into growth

Q5 creates a fresh growth opportunity for app marketers as consumers pursue new goals and explore new services. Twelve percent of mobile ad spend shifts into January, above the 10.5% average for February-December.⁵

Engagement remains strong on TikTok after the holidays: 85% of people spend the same amount of time or more on the platform, while 73% expect to spend the same amount of time or more downloading apps.⁶ TikTok-acquired audiences can also deliver meaningful value. In a US Android study, Health & Wellness users acquired through TikTok generated 117% higher monthly revenue per user than those acquired through other channels.⁷

With global CPMs easing from the November peak and Social Apps seeing more efficient CPAs in Q5, advertisers have an opportunity to build and scale qualified audiences with Smart+. Advertisers can optimize toward the outcomes that matter most, using App Install campaigns to drive downloads, App Event Optimization (AEO) to encourage in-app actions, or Value-Based Optimization to prioritize higher-value outcomes. They can then use flexible bidding strategies to match their goals: Max Delivery to drive volume, Target Cost Per Result to meet CPA targets, and Target ROAS (tROAS) to optimize for return on ad spend.

Creative can help sustain that performance. Creative Auto-select identifies and delivers effective assets, while TikTok Playables gives audiences an interactive way to experience an app before downloading.

For entertainment and short-form drama advertisers, Q5 is also an opportunity to scale viewer acquisition through TikTok Growth Max campaigns, reaching audiences who are ready to watch and convert.

Gaming: Build long-term player value

For gaming advertisers, Q5 combines strong player spending, sustained engagement, and potentially more efficient acquisition. Global mobile game spending reached $7.1 billion in January 2026, up 5.4% month over month, while TikTok audiences are 1.3–1.9x more likely to be core mobile gamers than the average internet user.⁸ Engagement remains strong after the holidays, with 64% of people expecting to spend the same amount of time or more playing video games.⁶

Smart+ D7 Value-Based Optimization (VBO) helps gaming advertisers acquire players with greater potential to generate long-term in-app ad revenue (IAA) and in-app purchases (IAP). By optimizing toward cumulative user value over the first seven days, advertisers can choose between two bidding strategies based on their campaign goals: D7 tROAS to optimize for return on ad spend or D7 Highest Value to maximize user value and support budget delivery.⁹

For iOS campaigns, integrating the TikTok SDK can provide richer revenue and purchase signals, helping strengthen value prediction and IAA optimization.

Commerce: Sustain post-holiday sales

After the holiday gifting rush, shopping doesn't stop. Instead, consumer priorities shift, with shoppers turning their attention from buying for others to treating themselves, exploring products, and making purchases they've been putting off. This creates a valuable opportunity for brands to sustain momentum beyond the holidays.

Smart+ Catalog Ads: Scale catalog-driven conversions

Smart+ Catalog Ads automate creative and product matching at scale, helping commerce advertisers connect shoppers with relevant products and drive lower-funnel efficiency. To make the most of Q5, advertisers can build a strong performance foundation, automate with Smart+, fuel campaigns with creative, and optimize with measurement.

GMV Max: Convert attention into sales

GMV Max helps advertisers scale TikTok Shop performance by optimizing campaigns toward sales. Advertisers can continue to scale their GMV Max campaigns to reach high-intent audiences, while additional capabilities enable more efficient and profitable growth. GMV Max Pro takes optimization a step further by incorporating operational costs, helping advertisers focus on profitability and not just ROAS. It includes two key capabilities currently in US beta:

  • Affiliate cost optimization: Considers affiliate commission rates alongside creative performance when ranking and selecting creatives.

  • Smart coupons: Helps drive incremental purchases by offering coupons to shoppers who need an extra incentive to buy.

For commerce advertisers, the fundamentals remain the same: build a strong foundation, automate with GMV Max, fuel performance with creative, and optimize with measurement.

Win the Q5 opportunity

Q5 is more than a post-holiday opportunity. It's a chance to turn sustained audience activity and a more efficient media environment into lasting growth. Advertisers can make the most of this period in three ways:

  • Buy media more efficiently: Take advantage of post-holiday auction dynamics to make your budget work harder.

  • Scale user acquisition: Maximize cost-efficient windows to acquire more users.

  • Build momentum into Q1: Turn Q5 performance into a stronger start to the new year, with more users, more learnings, and proven strategies to build on.

Q5 isn't a bonus period. It's a strategic growth sprint that helps advertisers capture immediate opportunities while laying the groundwork for the year ahead. Sustained audience activity, potentially lower CPMs, and performance solutions across Apps, Gaming, and Commerce make Q5 a valuable opportunity to drive growth on TikTok.
